Anime Matsuri – making cosplay great again. For sexual predators, Qanon, and the Alt Right.
Anime Matsuri is infamous. Since 2018 when the Houston Chronical released their piece “Houston’s Anime Matsuri festival draws sexual-harassment controversy” in which they lead with the following,
“The 12th annual gathering, which runs Thursday through Sunday at the George R. Brown Convention Center, is being boycotted over allegations that convention organizer John Leigh sexually harassed women in the anime and cosplay communities. The convention features the vibrant style of Japanese animation known as anime and cosplay, in which attendees dress up as their favorite anime characters.
The furor, initiated by a group calling itself Boycott Anime Matsuri, prompted Leigh, who runs the convention with his wife, Deniece Leigh, to post an apology for his behavior on the Anime Matsuri website. He has also worked with the Houston Area Women’s Center to come up with a “community assistance initiative” meant to foster a safe, nonbullying environment at the convention.”
Since then, Jon Leigh has used Anime Matsuri not to improve the Houston Anime Community. No, instead he has surrounded himself with Pro Trump, anti civil rights, Qanon radicals to shield himself from further attacks and accusations of sexual misconduct.
In short, he has turned his convention into a support group of enablers who have found themselves in simular sexual harassments situations. Namely in the form of the cults of Vic Mignogna and Donald Trump.
Anime Matsuri, Vic Mignogna, and MAGA go hand in hand.
Anime Matsuri appears to be fostering an environment of sexual predators and sexual harasment. Many on line believe this goes hand in hand with the “Anti-Woke” cult Vic Mignogna.
After the English release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, allegations of sexual harassment against Mignogna began to surface on social media, with some allegations dating back to 1989. Various accounts alleged that he kissed, groped, and made unwanted comments to fans without their consent, some of whom were underage. Fellow co workers, voice actresses Monica Rial and Jamie Marchi, tweeted their support for those speaking out, and alleged that he had also sexually harassed them.
The social media war of attacking survivors of “alleged” sexual harasment reached a peak with months of YouTube videos detailing the “mythology” of Mignogna being the victim of a liberal conspiracy to destroy him for his “Christian Faith”
Which brings us full “alchemist” circle back to Anime Matsuri!
Anime Matsuri and the Alt Religious Right.
Anime Matsuri Presents – The Awokening – how civil rights are ruining America for predators.
What can be considered a complete “FU” by Jon Leigh and the Alt Right, MAGA types that attended the convention, a formal, sanctioned panel called “AWOKENING: How the Culture War is Crippling Entertainment” was had to discuss how victims of “alleged” sexual harasment and respect for LGBTQIA and BIPOTIC people was ruining America and entertainment. In their word view (MAGA)(Qanon), the problem is not behavior of predators. No, the problem is being held accountable for actions and demanding change. It is never facts that present themselves. No, its is the endless “them” and “they” from the shadows undermining the “greatness” of America and freedom. Their freedom to act without consequence, of course.
But the “alleged” abuses extended beyond the poor taste and tone deft panels.
If there was any doubt about the audience they were attracting, all you have to do is look at some of the signage from the con floor.
Anime Matsuri abuses artist in attendance.
From some mysterious reason, the artists who paid hundreds of dollars for a table to vend their material at the Anime matsuri Artist Alley were placed on the third floor of the George R Brown Convention Center where the con was held.
It was a complete nightmare! No signage! No direction to the Artist alley! Nothing!
Anime Matsuri Panels, Events late or canceled!
Anime Matsui in summary.
Anime Matsuri provided a lot of fun and enjoyment for convention starved people from around the country. There is no doubt about that. Many do not care about real world politics or incidents, they just want to have fun and consumers have that right. For those that care about civil rights, for treating artist and guest with respect, and are mindful of the current political situation in the United States, Anime Matsuri was the opposite of fun.
Panels that dismissed sexual harasment. Signage and merch that gave support to terrorist that stormed our nations capitol on January 6th. Ignoring contacts and appearing to have defrauded and abused your vendors and artists. Poor planning and the outbreak of violence on your convention floor. For many, this was the disturbing reality of Anime Matsuri!
